The healthy-range figure inverts the formula for your height: the lower bound is 18.5 × height² and the upper bound 25 × height² (or 23 × height² with Asian cutoffs).   • "Enter a positive weight and height"

    One of the fields is empty, zero, or negative. Both measurements are required before a BMI can be computed.

  • The category says overweight but you are muscular

    Expected — BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat, only total mass. Strength athletes routinely score 25–30 with low body fat; the Body Fat Percentage Calculator gives a composition-based view instead.

  • The result seems off in imperial mode

    Check that feet and inches went into their separate fields — entering total inches into the feet box is the usual cause of a wildly wrong BMI.

Interpreting borderline or surprising results

  • Right on a category boundary: BMI is a continuous scale; 24.9 and 25.1 are practically identical. Do not over-read a boundary crossing of a few tenths.
  • Category changed after switching cutoffs: the Asian thresholds are deliberately lower, so a BMI of 24 is normal under standard cutoffs and increased-risk under Asian ones. Use whichever set your background and your clinician indicate.
  • You want the number for a child or teen: this calculator applies adult categories only — paediatric BMI uses age- and sex-specific percentile charts that a different tool (and ideally a clinician) should provide.
