What is a readability checker?

A readability checker estimates how demanding a passage may be to read by measuring visible text features such as sentence length, word length, letter count, and estimated syllables. This checker calculates five established formulas and adds a private writing workspace for reviewing individual sentences.

What the scores mean

Flesch Reading Ease uses a higher-is-easier scale. Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning Fog, SMOG, and Coleman-Liau return approximate U.S. grade levels. They may disagree because they measure different combinations of letters, syllables, sentence length, and complex words.

How to interpret grade levels

A grade estimate describes the surface complexity of the sample, not the reader's intelligence or the quality of the ideas. Use the target selector as a practical comparison with your intended audience. There is no single correct grade for every document.

Why different formulas produce different results

Coleman-Liau uses letters, while Flesch-Kincaid relies on estimated syllables. Gunning Fog emphasizes complex words, and SMOG was designed around polysyllabic words in longer samples. A technical passage can therefore receive noticeably different results across formulas.

How to simplify difficult sentences

Start by identifying sentences that carry several separate ideas. Consider splitting independent thoughts, reducing nested clauses, using a direct subject and verb, removing repetition, and defining unfamiliar technical terms. Preserve necessary precision rather than replacing every long word.

How It Works

The checker first removes URLs and email addresses from word calculations, then detects English alphabetic words, sentence boundaries, and paragraphs. A deterministic heuristic estimates syllables while accounting for vowel groups, silent trailing e patterns, contractions, hyphenated terms, and selected common acronyms. The resulting counts are passed to the five documented formulas. Sentence difficulty is classified separately using sentence length, average estimated syllables, complex-word density, and punctuation. No generative model or artificial intelligence is used.

Common Errors and Troubleshooting

Common errors

  • The formulas disagree

    This is expected because each formula uses different inputs. Review the range and the underlying sentence and word statistics.

  • A name or technical term has an unexpected syllable count

    Syllables are estimated by rules rather than a pronunciation dictionary, so names, acronyms, borrowed words, and unusual spellings may differ from spoken pronunciation.

  • A short passage has an extreme score

    Small changes have a large effect on short samples. Add more representative prose before drawing conclusions.

  • Non-English text produces a result

    The tool does not block mixed or non-English input, but English formulas and syllable rules do not reliably describe other languages.

Troubleshooting guide

If no score appears, check that the input contains alphabetic English words rather than only numbers, URLs, email addresses, or emoji. If sentence counts seem low, add terminal punctuation to prose that depends on line breaks. For a large document, stop typing briefly so the debounced analysis can finish. Browser privacy settings may prevent optional history from being saved, but analysis and exports will continue to work.

Limitations and Important Notes

All results are estimates. The syllable heuristic can be inaccurate for names, abbreviations, acronyms, technical vocabulary, unusual spelling, borrowed words, and dialectal pronunciation. SMOG is traditionally more reliable with at least thirty sentences; shorter results are explicitly labeled as estimates. Sentence boundaries in headings, fragments, lists, and unusual punctuation may differ from an editor's judgment. English readability formulas do not reliably generalize to Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Arabic, or other languages. The checker does not evaluate truth, usefulness, originality, tone, accessibility compliance, legal adequacy, educational suitability, or overall writing quality, and it does not replace professional review.

Begin with the reader's task and the information they need first. Prefer familiar words when they preserve the intended meaning, but do not remove necessary precision. Keep related ideas together, separate unrelated ideas, and make the main subject and action easy to find. Read revised passages aloud and ask representative readers for feedback. Use readability measurements as one input in a broader editorial process.

Flesch Reading Ease = 206.835 - 1.015 × (words ÷ sentences) - 84.6 × (syllables ÷ words).

Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level = 0.39 × (words ÷ sentences) + 11.8 × (syllables ÷ words) - 15.59.

Gunning Fog = 0.4 × ((words ÷ sentences) + 100 × (complex words ÷ words)).

SMOG = 1.043 × √(polysyllables × (30 ÷ sentences)) + 3.1291.

Coleman-Liau = 0.0588 × L - 0.296 × S - 15.8, where L is letters per 100 words and S is sentences per 100 words.

Display values are rounded to one decimal place.

Invalid divisions and non-finite values are prevented.

The overall estimated grade uses the middle two values after sorting the four grade-formula results.

Comparison

Flesch Reading Ease is useful for an intuitive higher-is-easier result, while Flesch-Kincaid translates sentence and syllable measurements into a grade estimate. Gunning Fog gives more influence to complex words. SMOG focuses on polysyllabic words and is best known for longer samples. Coleman-Liau avoids syllable estimation by using letter counts. None is universally superior, so the checker presents them separately and explains why their results may differ.
