About the ATS Resume Builder

Create a polished resume without introducing decorative layouts that can disrupt text extraction. The builder keeps your content separate from presentation, so you can compare and switch among Classic Professional, Modern Minimal, Compact Professional, Executive, Technical, Graduate, Academic, and Healthcare designs without rewriting anything.

Each design uses a semantic, single-column reading order with real text, standard headings, ordinary bullets, readable typography, and controlled page geometry. You can reorder or hide sections, add standard or custom sections, choose an A4 or US Letter page, and tune type, spacing, headings, dates, margins, and an accessible accent color within safe limits.

The structural review reports deterministic issues such as missing contact fields, absent dates, long bullets, small type, low color contrast, and decorative characters. These checks improve readability but do not predict a vendor ATS score, recruiter decision, interview, or employment outcome.

How to Use ATS Resume Builder

  1. Add accurate contact information, a concise summary, experience, education, and relevant skills.

  2. Add projects, certifications, publications, licences, courses, volunteering, memberships, references, achievements, or a clearly named custom section as needed.

  3. Open Templates & design, preview designs with your current data, and select one without changing resume content.

  4. Reorder sections by drag, keyboard-friendly arrow buttons, or a template-recommended order; hide empty optional sections.

  5. Choose a safe font, readable size, spacing, heading treatment, date alignment, A4 or Letter paper, margins, and an accessible accent.

  6. Inspect the print-faithful live preview and ATS structural review, then export PDF or another selectable-text format.

Key Features

  • Eight distinct templates

Professional layouts for corporate, technical, graduate, executive, academic, healthcare, and content-dense resumes.

  • Content-safe switching

Template selection changes presentation tokens, not your resume content or section configuration.

  • Controlled customization

Curated fonts, bounded sizes, spacing, headings, date alignment, margins, page size, and contrast-checked accent colors.

  • Section management

Drag or use keyboard buttons to reorder sections, hide optional sections, add standard sections, and name custom sections.

  • Live page preview

A4 and US Letter geometry, accurate line wrapping, fit-to-width and zoom controls, automatic reflow, and real sample content for empty resumes.

  • Deterministic review

Explainable checks for missing fields, dates, long content, low contrast, small type, symbols, links, and repetition.

  • Professional exports

Browser PDF, DOCX, TXT, and JSON outputs built from normalized resume data with real searchable text.

  • Private local drafts

Core editing, preview, scoring, and local autosave run in the browser; AI-assisted actions are separately disclosed.

When to Use ATS Resume Builder

  • Create a first structured resume

Build a conventional document without designing a layout from scratch.

  • Maintain a master draft

Save structured JSON and create tailored copies for different applications.

  • Replace a complex template

Move content into a simpler single-column reading order.

How It Works

One data source

The form, preview, score, local draft, and exporters read the same normalized resume object. Imported JSON is merged over a blank schema so missing fields do not crash the editor.

Export paths

TXT and JSON use browser Blob downloads. DOCX is built from structured paragraphs with a dynamically imported document library. PDF uses the browser's print workflow and dedicated print styles.

Supported Formats and Options

Formats

  • Import

Builder JSON, plus PDF, DOCX, or TXT old-resume import through server-side extraction and AI parsing.

  • Export

Printable PDF, DOCX, UTF-8 TXT, and structured JSON.

Options

  • Templates

Classic Professional, Modern Minimal, Compact Professional, Executive, Technical, Graduate, Academic, and Healthcare.

  • Typography

Calibri-compatible, Arial, Helvetica-compatible, Georgia, Times New Roman, Inter, Source Sans, Lato, and Merriweather stacks where supported.

  • Page setup

A4 or US Letter with narrow, balanced, or wide print margins.

  • Exports

PDF through the browser print engine, plus DOCX, plain text, and portable JSON.

Common Errors and Troubleshooting

Common errors

  • Sample preview exported

The sample is only a preview; add real content before export.

  • Invalid JSON import

Load a JSON file previously saved by this builder, not an arbitrary resume JSON shape.

  • Old resume cannot be read

Image-only PDFs may not contain extractable text.

  • Draft unavailable

Private browsing or disabled storage may prevent local autosave.

Troubleshooting guide

The resume looks too long

Use the page estimate, shorten repeated bullets, choose the Compact template, or reduce the font size without sacrificing readability.

A local draft did not return

Check whether site storage was cleared or blocked. Save JSON periodically when the draft matters.

Limitations and Important Notes

No resume template can guarantee compatibility with every applicant tracking system, a particular ATS score, an interview, or employment. Browser print engines may show small platform-specific differences in font substitution and page breaking. The builder uses safe fallback fonts when a chosen local font is unavailable. Pro badges describe the planned resume-tier mapping; templates are unlocked during the current public beta because the central plan catalog does not yet include a resume product. AI-assisted parsing and review require server processing and are clearly disclosed; the core editor and deterministic review do not require AI.

Privacy and Data Processing

Resume drafts are stored in this browser's local storage and are not account-synced by the public builder. PDF, DOCX, TXT, and JSON generation starts from the in-browser resume model. If you choose an AI-assisted action such as importing or reviewing a resume, submitted text is sent to the configured server-side AI provider as disclosed beside those controls. Avoid entering sensitive information you do not want processed, and download JSON if you need a portable backup.

Tips and Best Practices

Practical tips

  • Save a JSON copy before major edits.

  • Use three to six concise bullets for recent, relevant roles.

  • Keep standard section names and verify every date.

  • Open exported DOCX and PDF files before submitting them.

Best practices

Build from evidence

Start with responsibilities, projects, and outcomes you can verify. Add numbers only when they are accurate.

Test every export

Read the PDF visually, copy text from it to inspect extraction order, and open the DOCX in the application you expect recruiters to use.

Technical Details

The resume schema normalizes partial imports, locks standard section headings, and limits style choices to predefined values. Draft data uses the mf-resume-draft local-storage key. DOCX generation is dynamically imported; TXT and JSON are client-generated; PDF uses print CSS.

Who Is This For?

Students, career changers, and experienced applicants who want a structured resume editor; advisers helping clients improve content; and users replacing visually complex templates with a simpler format.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all eight resume templates ATS-friendly?

All eight use semantic, single-column HTML, real text, standard headings, ordinary bullets, and a predictable reading order. That design supports readable extraction, but no tool can guarantee behavior in every ATS product or workflow.

Will switching templates remove or rewrite my content?

No. Resume content and section configuration are stored separately from template presentation. Switching changes only the selected design and supported visual defaults.

Can I use A4 and US Letter paper?

Yes. Choose either page size and narrow, balanced, or wide margins. The live preview and print stylesheet use the same page settings.

Can I reorder or hide resume sections?

Yes. Reorder by drag or keyboard-accessible arrow buttons, toggle optional sections, restore the standard order, or apply a template-recommended order. Contact information remains in the resume header.

Does the structural review provide a real ATS score?

It provides transparent deterministic checks for structural and writing issues. It does not simulate a specific vendor ATS, predict ranking, or guarantee hiring outcomes.

Is PDF text searchable and selectable?

The PDF flow prints semantic HTML text rather than a page image, so supported browser PDF output remains searchable and selectable. Font substitution and pagination can vary slightly by browser and operating system.
